2010 was a “historic year” for our Region

The WFC Council has to be congratulated for its constant support of small National Associations and “New Regions” to help them mature their organizational structure to better cope with the demands of developing the profession in their area.

The WFC’s 5thEastern Mediterranean Meeting was held April 24-25, 2010 at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in Irbid, Jordan.  It was attended by chiropractors from 10 countries in the region, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. It featured:

  • On April 24 an  interdisciplinary spine care conference as part of an ongoing project to commence a first chiropractic school in and for the Middle East in the Jordanian University of Science and Technology (JUST).
  • On April 25 a formation of the Eastern Mediterranea & Middle East Chiropractic Federation (EMMECF), a new regional association. Elected officers are Dr. Stathis Papadopoulos (Cyprus), President, Dr. Mustafa Agaoglu (Turkey (Vice President), Dr. Samer Shebib (Syria) Vice President, Dr. Abdullah Al Harbi (Saudi Arabia), Treasurer and Dr. Reza Jafari (Iran) Secretary.

Keynote chiropractic speakers at the seminar include Dr. Jean Moss, President Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (on chiropractic education), Dr. Scott Haldeman (on the BJD Neck Pain Task Force and its new model of neck pain and its management) and Dr. John Triano (on management of back pain and the biomechanical effects of spinal manipulation). Keynote speakers from the JUST school of medicine included surgeons Dr. Mohammad Barbarawi (cervical spine) and Dr Ziad Odat (lumbar spine) and Khalid El Salem, Associate Professor of Neurology.

JUST is the second largest university in Jordan. It focuses entirely on health and sciences and has over 20.000 students. Programs include Medicinedentistry, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine, allied health sciences including PT, OT, optometry, speech psychology. Its impressive campus spreads over 3000 acres.

I t was agreed that the next Regional Meeting for 2011 will be held I Cyprus. Date and venue will be announced later.

Special thanks must be given to the Jordan University of Science and Technology for hosting the meeting and CMCC for its sponsorship, Mr. David Chapman-Smith to be congratulated for his continued support and dedication to the profession and Dr Phylactis Ierides for his organizational support for the different meetings. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to all my colleagues in the EMME Region for their cooperation, support and foresight for taking this historic step to advance the chiropractic profession in the region.

The Key developments in our region this year were:

Achievements:

  • A successful interdisciplinary spine care seminar forming part of promising ongoing negotiations to start a first chiropractic educational program for the Middle East region at a university in Jordan.
  • The formation of the East Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Chiropractic Federation(EMMECF)

Major Challenges:

  • Consolidation of the Newly formed Regional Federation (EMMECF)
  • Star the Chiropractic Program in Jordan.
  • Further Assistance to the National Associations to help them in their efforts to achieve Legislation/Regulation of the profession.

With the encouragement and determination of the New EMMECF Executive, I am confident that the Profession will prosper in our region.
